what happens if server strikes ball hits on his side of table and goes over net and then touches side lines of table of receiver end and fall
is it considered to be good serve?

Darryl Jul 21, 2015 at 11:49 AM

If player one hits the ball over the net and when it lands it has so much spin on it that it on its own goes back over to players one side of the net before player 2 can actually make contact is that players to point because the ball did go back on player one side

Can I switch the racket from one hand to the other, hence switching my racket hand to hit the ball during a point?

User Jun 30, 2015 at 7:32 AM

Question from a user: If someone strikes the ball, breaks it, therefore it doesn't bounce correctly on the other side...what is the ruling?

Ryan Feb 25, 2015 at 11:50 AM

Ya, thanks Piper, but that didn't answer my question. I read the rules, I'm just looking for a explanation of the rules. Or a quick answer. Can my opponent hit the ball in the air, before it bounces, if it's going off the table? I was under the impression it was like tennis, you must let the ball go out before hitting it.

Ryan Feb 21, 2015 at 6:38 AM

Hello, I have a quick question that I'm not able to answer from the official rules guide. If I hit the ball to my opponent and he hits or touches the ball with his paddle, while it is still in the air, but has already passed over his playing surface, is it my point?

PongWorld Feb 4, 2015 at 12:56 PM

Hi Randhir verma, I encourage you to try table tennis and think you will both enjoy the sport and gain much from it in terms of exercise, hand-eye coordination, flexibility and probably make some new friends as well. At age 33 of course it is difficult to reach a very high level but with good training and commitment I think you can go far.

PongWorld Feb 4, 2015 at 12:51 PM

Hi Charlie, you can play in several cities in Colorado that are open every week. Examples are Longmont, Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado Springs. See our Colorado page.

PongWorld Feb 4, 2015 at 12:49 PM

Hi Dave, your son is incorrect. He looses the point on the serve if he does not make a legal serve which it is not if he tosses the ball in the air but does not make contact with both sides of the table.

Dan Feb 3, 2015 at 3:48 PM

Calling all players in Lake Charles, LA. Interested immediate players, please contact. We have a venue at a church, and can play after work for a couple of hours. Hope to hear from you soon.

Rob Jan 18, 2015 at 11:57 PM

If a player spikes the ball, with no intent to hit the opposing players side of the table, and it hits the opposing players paddle, who gets the point...the person that spiked the ball, or the person whose paddle it hit?

Randhir verma Jan 5, 2015 at 8:53 AM

I am one of those who like a ping-pong.
But I've never learned proper table tennis.
What do I need to learn table tennis first priority?

Charlie Dec 29, 2014 at 9:27 AM

I'm looking to play in a league or on a weekly basis, or something.

I live up in North Denver (Broomfield), but I'm flexible.

Any ideas?

Now I'm in Bangkok plz tell me where is table tennis place in sathorn.
I wish to play very much.

dave Dec 2, 2014 at 8:46 PM

hi folks…hopefully someone can shed some light on this question. My son claims that when he serves the ball (his racquet strikes the ball), but the ball misses the table completely - that he should not loose a point, but rather should get to redo the serve. What would the official ruling on this be. Many thx, Dave

Hi, We are having a tournament and in the group stage we have a tie situation. 3 players are on equal points and all beat each other. i.e. player A beat B, Player B beat C, and Player C beat A. What are the rules concerning advancement to the knockout phases? Must we play again or can we do it in alphabetical order - is there a rule on this?

PongWorld Sep 8, 2014 at 8:47 AM

Hi David. No, the ball may not touch the free hand. The ball may only touch the playing hand to be a legal hit, no other body part.

David Aug 13, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Can ball be legally returned with free hand?

Incredible! I'm really enjoying the style and design of your site. Are you using a customized theme or is this freely available to all individuals? If you don't want to say the name of it out in the general public, please be sure to contact me at:. I'd absolutely love to get my hands on this template! Thanks.

PongWorld Nov 27, 2013 at 2:10 PM

@chelancatering. thanks for the heads up. we are unable to find the IE behavior you speak of, which article has this formatting?

chelancatering.c Nov 27, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Ie. I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Many thanks

S Yang Nov 6, 2013 at 12:20 PM

The number of tournament players depends on what you mean by tournament players. If you mean active ITTF tournament players then the figure is far below that.If you mean anyone in China who has ever played in a tournament then the figure is probably above 300 million since most Chinese grow up playing in school tournaments and almost everyone has played in at least one tournament at some point in their lifetime....and China has well over a billion in population.

S Yang Nov 6, 2013 at 12:19 PM

An olympic commentator is the original source of the tens of millions comment but thats unlikely at this point. That figure is probably way too high.

JC Nov 6, 2013 at 5:45 AM

Does anyone know how much money the top table tennis players in China make in product endorsements?I have heard its in the tens of millions.Any way to vberify this?

JC Nov 6, 2013 at 5:42 AM

I have heard estimates of 325 milliion tournament players in China. Can this be verified?

PongWorld Oct 25, 2013 at 11:54 AM

@north face: blogs typically have wysiwyg editors. we code from scratch.

Debasish Oct 24, 2013 at 6:20 AM

Hi, is stiga carbon cr worth buying? Any other racket better in that range?

north face outle Oct 17, 2013 at 3:40 AM

Howdy this is kinda of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding expertise so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

If during play (not during a serve) the ball strikes the nets retaining post and then bounces back onto the opponents side of the table is this counted as being "in"?

Are there a rule of how big the room must be where you play table tennis in, or space around the table?

PongWorld staff Jul 7, 2013 at 2:07 AM

Hi Brian, The official rule is to play each game to 11 points, win by two.

Legal shot?
If a player (A) hits a high back-spinning ball which then bounces on the opponents side (B) and spins back to the hitters side (A) of the table, can the opponent (B) come around the table to the player A's side and hit the ball to make his shot?

Erik Apr 6, 2012 at 5:24 AM

@Sheila, I have been to many tournaments and I have never heard anyone say x serving y. I think just saying x-y is sufficient. I do not know if there is a specific rule about this. If a match is umpired then the the players obviously do not say the score themselves.

Jerry Mar 29, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Hi JF, please google "long island ping pong club". I just designed a website for this club and there are some pictures and introduction on the site.

Sheila Mar 22, 2012 at 5:20 PM

While on vacation my husband got pissy at me because I said the score 3-2 instead of 3 serving 2. Is this a rule? Does it matter?
