The English are doing something very interesting to spread table tennis in their country. They are placing tables around London and showcasing matches in public places like at train stations. I wonder if it will work. |

Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel will host its Inaugural National Table Tennis Tournament in Westfield, New Jersey. The Tournament’s purpose is to bring together the diverse Jewish community of Table Tennis players across the United States.
The Tournament will be held on June 6, 2010 at one of the most venerable Table Tennis emporiums in the U.S., The New Jersey Table Tennis Club, at 226 North Avenue West in Westfield, NJ (www.NJTTC.org), beginning at 8:00 AM. All skill levels and ages are welcome to enter the tournament and at least one doubles competition is scheduled. Larry Bavly, the NBC on-line Table Tennis commentator for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will graciously serve as the Tournament Director. Attendees will play a minimum of four matches (exact format to be determined). The day will be fun and competitive and include refreshments, tee-shirts, and prizes awarded for winners and runners-up. Additionally, Sol Schiff, U.S. Table Tennis legend and 1966 Inductee to the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame will be in attendance.
Table Tennis, an Olympic-sanctioned sport, is second only to Soccer as the most-played sport in the world. It’s also a sport that many Jews have excelled in, several who have received their place in the Table Tennis Hall of Fame. Table Tennis has been a participating sport with Maccabi USA in international competitions at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, The Pan American Maccabi Games in Central and South America, The European Maccabi Games, and the Maccabi Australia International Games.
“The first Maccabi USA Table Tennis Open aims to bring players of all levels together for a fun, competitive day battling it out on the tables,” said Joel Roodyn, Chairman of the Table Tennis Tournament. “We hope to promote Maccabi USA, Table Tennis, and build friendships amongst the players across the U.S.”
Cost per entry is $30 and can be paid directly to Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel. You must be pre-registered in order to play in the tournament. Please call Ami Monson, Maccabi USA Program Director at 215-561-6900x116 for more information.

You cannot hit the ball before it has bounced on your side of the table (there is no volleying in table tennis like in tennis). Other than that, you can slam away at the ball to your heart's content :-) |

Hi Tono, no this is not legal. as at the beginning of the game ur opponent should see ur paddle, and u should play with it for the rest of the game. and even if the paddle is broken then u should complete the game with same paddle. |

Thanks PongWorld for setting my previous question about switching paddle hands. However, this brings up another question. Having the ability to use both hands I’ve developed a desire to use two paddles. For service, I stick one paddle in my back pocket and follow the normal rules then after the rally has started I get the second paddle from my back pocket. Is this illegal? |
PongWorld Jan 6, 2010 (2:03 PM)
Hi Tono,
Yes, switching paddle hands is legal. In fact, a famous Polish player named Grubba used to do it during rallies. Good for you! |
Tono Jan 5, 2010 (2:42 PM)
I’m not ambidextrous by birth but I can use both hands (learned for ping pong). I did not see any rules against switch paddle hands. Is switching paddle hands illegal? |
PongWorld Jan 4, 2010 (12:38 PM)
Emerson,
If you touch the ball before the ball passes the end line, then you "obstruct" the ball and your opponent scores a point. However once the ball has passed the end line, it is OK to touch the ball and you still score the point. See rules 2.5.8 about obstructions and 2.10.1.4 and 2.10.1.5 about scoring points. |

Desperately looking for serious Table Tennis players in Columbia SC for new club..HELP |
Emerson Jan 3, 2010 (11:58 AM)
Please help with a ruling.
How do you score the point when your oppenent hits a ball that is not a good return (off table) and is struck by me with my paddle, whether accidentally or not? I have always played that if the ball is struck by the paddle and does not go back in play and therefore is not a good return, the point scores for the opponent. |
PongWorld Jan 3, 2010 (11:32 AM)
Adam, It is legal to touch the ball with the playing hand. It is not legal to touch the ball with the non-playing hand. |

Jeffrey: Yes when serving, the ball can touch the center line. In singles, the ball can bounce anywhere on the opponents table, in doubles it should go diagonally from the right side. The center line is considered in-play just like in tennis. See rule section 2.1.6. |
